Brothers Killed In Highland Park Hit-And-Run

When you head out in your vehicle each day, we know that the last thing you expect to happen is that you will be involved in a vehicle crash. However, accidents do happen. There are times when the negligence or carelessness of another person can cause severe injuries or even death.
At the Compass Law Group, we are here to help when you need a Los Angeles car accident lawyer. We will work diligently to secure the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to talk about a recent hit-and-run crash that took the life of two brothers.

What Happened Here?

A recent crash in Highland Park took the life of two brothers, Benigno Feli Zuniga and Jesse Zuniga, both of whom were in their 20s.
The crash happened on May 5 in the early morning hours when a Chevy Silverado slammed into a white Ford sedan in the 700 blocks of North San Pascual Avenue. The brothers were in the sedan at the time of the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck and his passenger fled the scene and are being sought by the LAPD.
Witnesses told police that the truck reached speeds of up to 80 mph before it struck the sedan and other cars in the area.

What Can Happen

This incident shows us that, despite how safely we operate behind the wheel, we cannot predict the actions of other drivers. We do not yet know if drugs or alcohol played a part in this crash. In many hit-and-run crashes, that is the case.
What we do know is that, during the latest year of reporting in California, there were:

  • 3,623 traffic crash fatalities
  • 278,000 traffic crash injuries

While most vehicle crash injuries are minor, many are severe and can leave a victim facing long periods of rehabilitation or even disabled. It is not uncommon for us to see the following injuries as a result of crashes:

  • Spinal cord injuries (with possible paralysis)
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations

Of particular concern on our roadways are drivers who operate while impaired. During the latest reporting year, alcohol-impaired drivers were responsible for 29% of all traffic deaths. We also know that distracted drivers and those who speed and drive recklessly are just as dangerous.
