If you are a motorcyclist, then you know there are more risks on the roadway for you than if you were inside a regular passenger vehicle. That is why you take steps to ride safely. However, you cannot control the actions of other drivers around you.
At the Compass Law Group, we are here when you need a Torrance motorcycle accident attorney. Our qualified and experienced team will work to secure the compensation you deserve. Today, we want to talk about a local man who was killed in a tragic crash.
Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Serious
We have learned that Matthew Izzo, 31, died after a car pulled in front of his motorcycle. Police say that a Ford Fusion made a left hand turn when exiting south from a service road off of Sepulveda Boulevard. That put the vehicle into the path of Izzo, who was traveling west.
The driver of the Fusion, a 21-year-old Torrance woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police say that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash.
Izzo was an employee at Rizzo’s Pizza, a place where he had worked since he was a teenager.
What Can Happen?
California is a popular place for motorcycles. However, we know that the risk of injuries in a crash is higher for motorcyclists than for those in traditional passenger vehicles. Even when a cyclist wears a helmet, they are at risk of sustaining the following injuries:
- Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)
- Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or road rash
Each of these injuries requires immediate medical treatment. For severe injuries, a motorcycle crash victim may need surgery and rehabilitation in order to make a full recovery.
- During the latest reporting year in the state, there were 14,418 motorcycle crash injuries and 548 motorcycle crash fatalities.
In many cases, these crashes are caused by driver carelessness. In the story above, the driver likely did not check her surroundings. Unfortunately, these mistakes are much more dangerous to motorcyclists.
Alcohol-impaired and distracted drivers also post major problems for motorcyclists, as do those who speed and operate recklessly.
