We want to bring you this story because it highlights some positive progress in a tragic story. A Santa Clarita father, Rich Ellyson, has been moved out of the ICU unit at the hospital. He has been there since sustaining life-threatening injuries in a September 30 crash that sent both him and his daughter to the hospital.
“My dad has been overwhelmed by all the love and support he has received. He continues to improve daily and is out of ICU and in a regular room now,” his older daughter said.
The accident happened as Rich and his younger daughter were heading to a dirt bike race early in the morning. A driver who was heading the wrong way entered the highway in front of them. Rich swerved his vehicle so he would absorb most of the impact, not his daughter. When first responders arrived, they found the two in their overturned vehicle. The wrong-way driver died at the scene due to his injuries.
Rich has two broken legs, two broken ankles, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, as well as internal bleeding.
At the Compass Law Group, we are grateful that Rich and his daughter are okay, but we know that this is the type of situation motorists around here face daily. If you need a car crash attorney, our experienced team is ready to help.
The Damages
Vehicle accidents are common. While most result in only property, many are much worse. Even minor injuries can result in major medical bills.
Serious injuries, like the ones that Rich sustained, can lead to long hospital stays and even longer recovery times. We know that spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, internal injuries, broken and dislocated bones and more are common in severe car crashes.
We also know that they can lead to major medical bills.
Will your insurance cover all of your accident-related expenses? What if you are unable to work and earn money to support your family?
During the latest reporting year for California, there were nearly 12,000 serious injuries due to vehicle accidents. Many of these were caused by careless or reckless driver behavior.
We know that speeding is a problem across the state. We also know that when it is combined with distracted driving, major accidents can occur.
Despite law enforcement making over 160,000 DUI arrests annually, drunk drivers are still responsible for more than 25% of all traffic-related fatalities.
